BCRFA Advocates for Industry Consultation on 900 Helmcken Proposal
Ian joined business leaders, tourism organizations, community representatives, and elected officials at a recent press conference regarding the proposed overdose prevention site at 900 Helmcken Street in downtown Vancouver.
The event brought together more than 300 attendees, including members of the media, to discuss concerns surrounding the proposed location and the need for greater collaboration between government, health authorities, businesses, and local communities. Speakers included representatives from the Downtown Vancouver business community, Destination Vancouver, the City of Vancouver, and affected residents.
During his remarks, Ian emphasized the importance of meaningful consultation, transparent decision-making, and timely action that balances public health objectives with the needs of businesses, employees, residents, and visitors. He reinforced the BCRFA's position that government, industry, and community stakeholders must work together to develop solutions that support both public safety and economic vitality.
The BCRFA will continue advocating for policies that ensure hospitality businesses have a voice in decisions that impact the communities in which they operate.

Minimum Wage Increase Now In Effect
BC's minimum wage has increased to $18.25 per hour, up from $17.85, representing a 2.4% increase. While the BCRFA supports fair wages for workers, we recognize that increasing labour costs continue to place added pressure on hospitality businesses already managing tight operating margins.
The BCRFA continues to advocate on behalf of the industry regarding the broader impacts of rising labour costs, including concerns around Employer Health Tax thresholds and increasing WorkSafeBC premiums.
Members with questions about the wage increase or its impact on their business can reach out to BCRFA HR Advisor Gillian McGregor for guidance and support at 604.505.2374 or gmcgregor@bcrfa.com.

Advocacy in Action - New Alcohol Purchasing Flexibility Approved
The BC Government has approved a new three-year pilot program allowing hospitality licensees to purchase alcohol directly from both public and private retailers. After more than eight years of advocacy by the BCRFA, we are pleased to see this collaborative work move forward.
Beginning in June, this change will provide restaurants, bars, and pubs with greater operational flexibility, improved access to specialty products, and more opportunities to innovate and enhance guest experiences. The new policy is expected to help businesses respond more quickly to inventory needs while expanding beverage offerings for customers.
BCRFA thanks Minister Lana Popham, Lewis Hart of Laowai, and the Business Technical Advisory Group (BTAG) for their collaboration in helping advance this important initiative. This is a significant step forward for BC's hospitality industry and another example of how sustained advocacy can create meaningful change for operators across the province.
The BCRFA will continue working with government and industry partners to advocate for policies that support business growth, operational efficiency, and long-term industry success.
