COVID-19 update and it's impact on the restaurant industry

As COVID-19 spreads abroad and more information becomes available, we want to provide you with some sources regarding the recent COVID-19 outbreak and the current status in Canada. Tourism and hospitality go hand-in-hand and, acknowledging that we are committed to communicating reliable news to our members. We are keeping an eye on developments both at home and abroad.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has deemed the risk to Canadians from COVID-19 to be low. The PHAC is monitoring new cases daily, and has issued travel advisories to some nations, including Iran and China. Risk to travelers abroad varies on the destination. All travelers returning from abroad are asked to self-report if they experience symptoms, as well as being subject to screening procedures as deemed necessary by health and travel authorities.

We are urging our members to stay abreast of developments, and combating misinformation, by monitoring the Public Health Authority of Canada website here

Please read the World Health Organization’s “Getting Your Workplace Ready for COVID-19” here. Global cooperation is key to ensuring successful containment.

Following in the footsteps of Destination BC, we recognize that what impacts tourism will impact the foodservices industry as well.

While the Canadian health authority assures the general public that no extra precautions are necessary at this time, regular precautions for preventing the spread of other common respiratory viruses (like those you take for the flu) should always be followed.

Mostly importantly, we must remember that Canada remains a safe place and continue to support each other’s businesses, and each other, during this time. Getting the right information is paramount to success.

We know that many businesses are connected to tourism, and thus may fear being adversely affected by these global developments, but please know that we are working hard to promote programs that will encourage local people to support businesses, restaurants, and other establishments where they live.

As always, if you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact membership@BCRFA.com.
